It’s Christmas Eve!

With one day to go before Christmas, we wanted to highlight an activity that’s much loved by both locals and visitors alike. We wanted to feature a place that’s not only unique to the region, but somewhere that provides both a festive Christmas-y atmosphere as well as a true winter wonderland. And we’re happy to say that Grouse Mountain on Vancouver’s North Shore makes our final Christmas Countdown!

Known as the Peak of Vancouver, Grouse offers panoramic views of the city below and a multitude of activities for the whole family to enjoy: ice skating on the frozen pond, snowshoeing, skiing, sleigh rides, and more. Even if you don’t want to partake in any activities, taking the Skyride up to the mountain is an experience in itself. Once at the top, go for a stroll through the snow or pop into the cafe for a hot chocolate.

Grouse Mountain is open 365 days of the year, including Christmas. For more information, including their holiday hours, visit their website at www.grousemountain.com.

We’re counting down the days before Christmas! For each day until Christmas, we’ll highlight a Christmas tradition that you and your family can do in the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region. This is our final Christmas Countdown post for 2011. Read our previous post: Christmas Countdown – 2 Days

For many people, their Christmas traditions have more to do with spending time with family while enjoying the great outdoors – going for a snowshoe walk in the mountains, heading up the slopes for some skiing, going for a skate around the frozen pond, or simply strolling around a park arm in arm.

For those looking for an authentic winter wonderland experience, take a look at what’s going on at Manning Park Resort. Located an hour drive east of Hope in the middle of the northern Cascade Mountains, it’s here where you’ll not only find outdoor adventure, but a variety of Christmas events as well.

On Friday, December 23, the Manning Park Resort is having a lantern-building workshop from 6-8pm at the Games Room in The Lodge. It costs $5 per person or $10 for the whole family.

Then, on Saturday – Christmas Eve! – the Manning Park Resort hosts their Torchlight Parade and Winter Lantern Festival. This is a free event taking place at Manning Park’s ski area at 7pm with the Torchlight Parade starting at 8pm. Santa will also be there! There is shuttle service starting at 5pm, departing from The Lodge. If you’re interested in attending, they recommend dressing warm and also to bring a flashlight and/or head lamp.

What do you get the golfer who has everything? How about a Golf Surrey Pass?

Yes, Golf Surrey is once again selling these popular golf passes! Right now the Golf Surrey Pass is $189 (plus HST) and it gives the recipient a total of four rounds of golf in Surrey, British Columbia. That’s one round each at Morgan Creek, Peace Portal Golf Club, Northview Golf & Country Club, and Hazelmere Golf Course.

Think about it – it’s a fast and easy way to give the golfer in your life the opportunity to discover new golf courses in Metro Vancouver while being able to enjoy the sport they love the most. And since the pass has a value of $315, getting it for $189 is an incredible deal!

Buying a Golf Surrey Pass

Simply purchase the Golf Surrey Pass online at www.golfsurrey.ca/pass. Don’t doddle too long, however – there are limited quantities. Knowing that their 2011 passes sold out last spring, I’d imagine the same will happen this time around too!

Ask anyone in Metro Vancouver for a Vancouver Christmas tradition, and they’ll no doubt mention the “Christmas Train” at Stanley Park. Officially known as Bright Nights in Stanley Park, this is the event’s 14th year and it’s sounding like it’s as popular as ever. We’ve even heard some describe it as “epic”!

Organized by the Vancouver Park Board and British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, the event focuses around train ride through the temperate rainforest, although much more to experience when you’re there. Admire the animated displays and listen to holiday sounds, and treat yourself to hot chocolate, fresh popcorn and roasted chestnuts. Catch a glimpse of Santa and the parade of trees at the North Pole. Professional and community choirs and bands will also be in the Plaza on special nights.

Bright Nights in Stanley Park is open from 3pm to 10pm from Sunday to Thursday, and from 3pm to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. For admission prices and ticket purchasing details, visit the official Bright Nights in Stanley Park website at http://vancouver.ca/parks/events/brightnights.
