It’s the unofficial start to summer this weekend and there is LOTS going on in the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region. If you have no plans for the long weekend, here are a few ideas to get you started…

Cloverdale Rodeo – Surrey

Now in its 124th year, the Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair is the largest rodeo in the region and it’s taking place all weekend May 18-21. Whether you’re seeking rodeo events, live entertainment, or the Fraser Valley’s largest midway, there’s plenty of fun for the whole family.

Hyack Festival – New Westminster

The 41st annual Lowe’s Hyack Festival Week kicks off on Friday, May 18 with opening night celebrations at 7pm and fireworks at 10pm. The weeklong festivities also include the DiverseCity Multicultural Festival on Saturday, the 28th annual Hyack Antique Fair on Sunday and Monday, as well as the longest-running May Day celebration in the British Commonwealth.

Night Markets – Richmond

There are two night markets in Richmond this year! One is the Summer Night Market while the other one is the Richmond Night Market. Both will be open Friday to Monday this weekend and both are easy to get to. Simply take the Canada Line to Bridgeport where you can walk to the Richmond Night Market or take the free shuttle to the Summer Night Market. Better yet, visit both! Bring an appetite and your cash.

Teddy Bear Picnic – Harrison Mills

Bring your teddy bear out to Kilby Historic Site this Sunday, May 20 for a picnic in your bear’s honour. Included in the price of admission, both child and bear will enjoy complimentary tea and cookie! This year’s activities include the dress up Tickle Trunk, a sing-a-long with Bert and Cherry, a photograph booth, decorating cookies and crafts.

Roberts Creek Arts Festival – Sunshine Coast

Take the 40 minute ferry to the Sunshine Coast where the Roberts Creek Arts Festival is happening only a 20 minute drive away from the ferry terminal! This two day festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday and is loaded with contemporary culture, music, film, art and design. Explore beautiful studios, galleries, gardens and fields, filled with creativity, performances, delicious local food, drink and engaged people.

May Day Parade & Festivities – Fort Langley

Join thousands of visitors along Mavis and Glover Roads to watch the 90th Annual May Day Parade starting at 11 am on Monday, May 21 followed by activities at Fort Langley Park. Back at the Fort Langley National Historic Site, activities begin at 10:15am with an Historic Weapons Demo and continue right on until 5pm. Admission is free so come and enjoy the festivities all day!

Rick Hansen’s Many in Motion Relay – Surrey & White Rock

Come out to the Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex this Saturday, May 19 from noon to 3pm for Rick Hansen’s Many in Motion Relay Community Celebration. Welcome to medal bearers and relay team while enjoying sledge hockey demos, children’s activities, presentations and entertainment. Likewise, White Rock is hosting their Rick Hansen Relay End of Day Celebration, also on Saturday. Welcome the medal bearers and relay team while enjoying live entertainment, a BBQ, and lots of family fun.

Farmers Markets

Many of the region’s farmers markets have kicked off this month, including some you may not even have known existed. Use the long weekend to discover what awaits at the Mission City Farmers Market on Saturdays (9am-1pm) and the Coquitlam Farmers Market on Sunday (9am-1pm).

Hiking Lynn Canyon – Vancouver’s North Shore

What better way to spend the day than with a walk through a temperate rainforest? Lynn Canyon Park‘s always been one of my favourite places for a short nature walk through the woods as it has the free suspension bridge to cross, a variety of trails, waterfalls and beautiful scenery. And the best part? It’s free!

Whistler Mountain Bike Park

It’s officially mountain bike season! The Whistler Mountain Bike Park will be opening this Friday, May 18  from 10am until 5pm where it will remain open daily throughout the summer. Don’t have a mountain bike or appropriate gear? That’s okay; you can rent that all in Whistler too.

BC Motocross Races – Pemberton

If you’re heading to Whistler for the weekend and you’re interested in motocross, you may want to drive the 20 minutes north to Pemberton where the BC Motocross Races will be happening. Held at the the Green River Motocross Track, drop by on Saturday for day one of racing, or come by on Friday to register yourself in the race.

River Rafting – Fraser Canyon

With the spring meltwater surging local rivers, now is the time to be river rafting! Local river rafting operators include Kumsheen, Hyak River Rafting, Chilliwack River Rafting, REO Rafting Resort and Fraser River Raft Expeditions offering rafting adventures of all types along the Fraser, its tributaries, and the Thompson.

Hidden Secrets: Events for the Weekend of August 5-7

August 3rd, 2011

Photo: Attendees at Thoroughbred: A Day At The Races.

Hidden Secrets is a blog post series we do when we want to highlight quirky, one-of-a-kind attractions, places, or events. Sometimes it’s simply something cool that piques our interest. Our goal with it? To inspire you to get out of your weekend routine, to explore new places and experience new activities. Here’s what’s happening on this upcoming weekend:

1. Thoroughbred: A Day At The Races – Vancouver:

Described as “Kentucky Derby meets the Hamptons”, Thoroughbred: A Day At The Races comes to Vancouver’s Hastings Park this Saturday afternoon. Round up a group of friends and show off your society flair, your knowledge of fine music and couture. Or use it as an excuse to drink bourbon – it’s sponsored by Woodford Reserve, after all. Thanks to Vancity Buzz to putting this event on our radar. They truly got Twitter abuzz late Tuesday night as locals frantically tried to track down hats and ascots for the occasion.

When: Saturday, August 6 at 12pm.
Website: http://attheraces.ca/

2. Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts – Sechelt:

If you fancy yourself a literary connoisseur, you may wish to spend your weekend in Sechelt for the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts (SCFWA). Starting on Thursday and going strong until Sunday, the SCFWA is Canada’s longest running summer gathering of Canadian writers and readers. While some event tickets have sold out already (no Margaret Trudeau for you!), the majority of events are still available, including tickets to see such prominent authors as Timothy Taylor, Grant Lawrence, Lorna Goodison, Judy Fong Bates, and Johanna Skibsrud, to name a few.

When: Thursday, August 4 to Sunday, August 7.

3. BC Supermoto Race at the TRADEX- Abbotsford:

Dirt bike races are happening at Abbotsford’s TRADEX this weekend! Whether you’re a spectator, a newbie to the sport, or a serious racer, the BC Supermoto Association wants you to drop by for a Supermoto race. They claim, “We guarantee you’ll be a Supermoto fan at the end of the day”. Riders of all ages are welcome. All you need is a dirt or dual purpose bike in good working order and proper riding gear.  The event is free for spectators, but you’ll have to pay fees to race – the details are on the website.

When: Sunday, August 7, from 9am-5pm.

4. 8th Annual Blueberry Festival – Cloverdale:

It’ll be featuring a blueberry pie eating contest and the Blueberry Arts Festival, but it’s also so much more! The festivities also include the Surrey Show N Shine car show (complete with pancake breakfast and BBQ), amusement rides, mini golf, a bouncy castle, live entertainment, a farmers market, trolley rides and a variety of local exhibitors. 5. Edible Garden Tour – Powell River:

If you love gardening and eating locally, you’ll want to be in Powell River for their 3rd Annual Edible Garden Tour. The Edible Garden Tour is a great way to see how other people in the region are producing some of their own food. There will be a morning set of five gardens to visit in Lund and Wildwood, and an afternoon set of five more gardens in Westview, Cranberry, and Townsite. There will also be a food literacy treasure hunt to test your knowledge of food and gardening. The Edible Garden Tour kicks off Powell River’s sixth annual 50-Mile Eat-Local Challenge.

6. Chilliwack Fair – Chilliwack:

Bring the family out to the Fraser Valley this weekend for the Chilliwack Fair – the second-oldest continually-run fair in British Columbia. It’s been going strong since 1873!  There will be 4-H animals, a petting zoo, a midway, one of the top-rated rodeos in British Columbia, a home and garden show, crafts, agricultural shows (including threshing demos, a tractor parade, and steam machinery), and live entertainment on the 89.5 The Hawk Stage.

There will be a variety of food items to sample and purchase including local wines, honey, flowers, music, local artisan products and of course berries! There will also be kids activities to keep them entertained. The goal of the festival is to promote local farmers, processors and vendors that are working hard to produce food in a sustainable way and to encourage citizens of the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley to shop in our region. And yes, the event is free!

Canada Day in Vancouver, Coast & Mountains

June 28th, 2011
Canada Day in Vancouver, Coast & Mountains

Happy 144th Birthday, Canada! We’ve highlighted 10 really cool ways to celebrate Canada Day throughout the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region this Friday, July 1st:

1. Canada Place – July 1:

If you’re going to be in Vancouver – downtown, specifically – Canada Place is definitely the hub of Canada Day activities. At 10am is the traditional citizenship ceremony – the kickoff to the festivities. From 10am until 7pm there will be over 30 bands on 5 stages. Some noteworthy acts include Dal Richards, the Arrogant Worms, C.R. Avery, Rich Hope and His Evil Doers, and the Grapes of Wrath. Later on in the evening there will be a parade. It starts at 7pm at Broughton & Georgia, following along Georgia, turning up Burrard and then ending at Hastings. Finally, fireworks will be lit at 10:30pm off Burrard Inlet (not English Bay – that’s later on in the month).

Fireworks: Yes

2. The 66th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival – July 1:

If you’re seeking a small town community-wide Canada Day event with a 2 hour parade, a midway, trade shows, horticulture shows, food fairs, live music, and cultural presentations, the annual Steveston Salmon Festival takes the cake. For 66 years, Steveston has been hosting one of the greatest Canada Day celebrations in BC. Starting with the parade at 10am, the entire village of Steveston closes to traffic and turns into one gigantic family-friendly party. The majority of the events are centered around the Steveston Community Centre grounds, including the famous salmon BBQ and the Japanese martial arts, bonsai, and ikebana demonstrations – a key component to appreciating Steveston’s Japanese heritage. Photographer Clayton Perry captures the energy of the Steveston Salmon Festival in his photo gallery here.

3. Surrey Canada Day – July 1:

Maybe you’re in the mood for a big party this Friday. If so, head to Surrey’s Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre for the largest Canada Day celebration in Western Canada! Festivities will be taking place from 10am until 10:30pm and include a midway, a bouncy world, Storyville for kids, a marketplace, a food fair, a freestyle motocross show, as well as many musical performances. Trooper, Harlequin, Big River (the Johnny Cash tribute band), and the Peak Performance Project’s Top 20 finalists will all be performing, amongst many others. The celebrations come to a close with fireworks at 10:15pm.

Fireworks: Yes

4. Powell River on Canada Day – July 1:

Maybe you’re seeking an eclectic mix of events this Canada Day. If so, get over to the Upper Sunshine Coast. Powell River’s Open Air Market will be having live music and a farmers market from 10:30am until 2:30pm. Afterward, chill out on Willingdon Beach between 4pm and 10pm for all kinds of family fun, including a giant birthday cake and a bonfire on the beach. There’s no greater way to experience summer on the BC coast, in my opinion. Oh, and word is that local radio station CJMP will be coordinating a flash mob! Now while spending an entire summer’s evening on the beach is bliss, you can also venture over to the Evergreen Theatre to catch SOAP’s (Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific‘s) final concert of the season. The performance starts at 7:30pm and features pieces by Strauss, Debussy, and Bruckner.

5. Langley Canada Day Celebrations – June 30 & July 1:

Why celebrate just on Canada Day when you can turn it into a 2 day event? That’s what’s happening in Langley. On both Thursday, June 30th and Friday, July 1st, Langley’s McLeod Park will be hosting back to back Canada Day celebrations. There are a wide variety of free concerts, including R&B band Mowtown, local CiTR Shindig 2010 winner’s The Oh Wells, local ABBA tribute band ABRA Cadabra, Treehouse Network’s Bobs & Lolo, as well as Elvis & Patsy Cline tributes. There will also be mini golf, bike demos, a craft fair, a food fair, dozens of vendors, magicians, face painting, and of course fireworks (yes, both nights) to cap off the festivities at 10:30pm.

Fireworks: Yes

6. Whistler Canada Day – July 1-4:

The fact that Canada Day and the USA’s Independence Day create a sort of long weekend “sandwich” this year hasn’t been lost on Whistler. No way. They’re taking full advantage of this cross-border double long weekend and are celebrating with events for four days straight from July 1st until July 4th! For Canada Day there will be community yoga, a pancake breakfast, tons of street entertainment and children’s activities, as well as a Canada Day Parade at 12 noon. Later on in the evening there will be free concerts, including a 9pm concert by Ashley MacIsaac. Similar events (with exception to the parade) will take place on Saturday and Sunday, including performances by Fred Penner, Matthew Barber, and Hannah Georgas. Canada Day fireworks happen only on Friday night at 10:15pm, although there are Independence Day fireworks on Monday night if you are to be so lucky.

Fireworks: Yes

7. Mission Canada Day Celebrations – July 1:

The Fraser River Heritage Park will be the hub of Canada Day festivities in the district of Mission this Friday. Out of all Canada Day festivities going on, it sounds as if Mission’s celebrations have one of the more diverse offerings – with gladiator jousting, a watermelon eating contest, and an RCMP obstacle challenge. There’s also a Superdawg show, a Loggers show, and an X-treme Bike show – all happening periodically throughout the day.  There will be tons of family-friendly fun such as face painting, balloon animals, a bouncy castle, hayrides, a sandbox, mini golf, pony rides, monster basketball , a fish pond, a hockey shoot, and yes, free music and entertainment throughout the day. If you get there early enough (8:30am-11:30am), you can start with a pancake breakfast. If you’re there until the end (10pm), you’ll be treated by fireworks.

Fireworks: Yes

8. North Vancouver Canada Day Celebrations – July 1:

North Vancouver’s hosting several Canada Day festivities this year. Start your Canada Day with a pancake breakfast at Grand Boulevard Park. Afterward, watch the North Shore Canada Day Parade at 10am. Apparently the best viewing area is around 14th Street & Lonsdale. After the parade, head over to Waterfront Park where there will be free events from 12 noon until 4pm. Expect to find food fairs, a craft fair, face painting, a baseball cage, wall climbing, mini golf, free cupcakes (!), a bouncy castle, a playground, and lots of free entertainment. The tugboat ballet should be particularly amusing!

Fireworks: No
Website: http://www.northvancanadaday.com/

9. Sechelt on Canada Day – July 1:

Sechelt sounds like the place to be on the Lower Sunshine Coast this Friday. It all begins with a pancake breakfast at Gilligans, followed by bike decorating contest at the Trail Bay Mall. There will be a Canada Day parade at 11am followed by plenty of festivities at Hackett Park. These include crafts, local entertainment, a food fair, pony rides, clowns, a bouncy castle, face painting and more! And from 5pm until 10pm, there will be a beer garden at the Hackett Park tennis courts – an important detail, you see.

Fireworks: No
Website: http://www.secheltdowntown.com/

10. Abbotsford Canada Day – July 1:

Abbotsford is full of events this Friday. Start off your Canada Day with a pancake breakfast at Abbotsford Exhibition Park, and then head over to South Fraser Way for the Prospera Credit Union Canada Day Parade. Festivities continue all afternoon at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park and include a Canada Day cake, mini golf, hayrides, free entertainment, food fairs, play zones, community displays, as well as performances by Charlotte Diamond and the Tom Fun Orchestra. Fireworks complete the full day of events at 10pm.

Family Activities for the May Long Weekend

May 18th, 2011
Family Activities for the May Long Weekend

May two-four. The May long weekend. Victoria Day long weekend. Whatever you know it by, it’s fast approaching. Considered the unofficial kick-off to summer for many Canadians, it’s that one weekend where people get out of town for their first mini vacation of the summer. Perhaps you’re sticking around close to town. Want to know what’s going on? We’ve highlighted 5 activities below that we think are perfect for the whole family:

1. Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair – May 20-23:

For many Lower Mainlanders, the Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair is practically synonymous with the May long weekend… although some of you prefer to spend your time at the country fair rather than at the rodeo. Fair enough! When we asked for tips and advice on Twitter, several of you piped up. ”We like the country fair, sort of a mini-PNE” said @NtQtSouthSurrey. “In younger days [we] danced the night away at the saloon!” @MapleWashing told us that ”The rodeo is a great way to start summer!” They explained, “Every year we go to the rodeo. Last minutes tickets can happen but it’s easier to buy in advance. Vendor food is the way to go, always do the midway, wear comfy shoes, be prepared for lines, GO to the concerts, pick someone to cheer for during rodeo events, [and] have a meet up spot.” Sound advice for families! And local blogger @SavvyInsider told us to explect “lots of rides, farm animals to see, pet, and take pics, [as well as] carney food”. For a full list of events, visit the official website at www.cloverdalerodeo.com.

2. Chinatown Night Market:

It’s the opening weekend of the Chinatown Night Market – a favourite of mine (especially when you combine it with a drink at the Keefer Bar!) Although not as large or as famous as the night market in Richmond, Vancouver’s Chinatown Night Market really breathes life into an otherwise quiet Chinatown evening. Open from 6:30pm until 11pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the market takes over the entire block of Keefer Street between Columbia and Main. I typically recommend the Chinatown Night Market for families or friends as a post-dinner stroll destination, especially when you’re already downtown but you don’t quite want to call it night. Expect to find an assortment of kiosks selling food (bubble tea, BBQ meat on skewers, chow mein), crafts, and gifts. You probably won’t spend much time here – half an hour to an hour, tops, but it’s definitely worth a visit – it’s the whole package of being in Chinatown that really makes this market. For full details, visit their official website here.

3. Pender Harbour May Day – May 21:

Established in 1946, this is the second-oldest May Day celebration in BC and it’s taking place this Saturday on the Sunshine Coast. As described by local journalism student Amy Reid on her blog, “Pender Harbour is the second oldest city to celebrate May Day in BC, next to New Westminster. Local businesses shut down to watch the parade, and the town is always packed, buzzing with so many locals you would think all 3000 of them were out celebrating. Live music is in the air, children are getting their faces painted, dancing and everyone seems to be having a good time.” Also included in the festivities is a beer garden, dance, games, food concessions and vendors. For details, there’s a great writeup on Big Pacific’s Pender Harbour page here.

4. Attack of Danger Bay – May 22

Okay, so it seems like Pender Harbour’s definitely the place to be for the long weekend! If you love adrenaline and extreme sports, you won’t want to miss out on the Attack of Danger Bay – the world’s biggest international downhill longboard race with $8,000 in prizes and an all-ages (no alcohol) award show with live music and giveaways! Longboarding does not refer to surfing, but a long skateboard which is used for cruising along streets and carving down hills. While there are events on Saturday (the all-inclusive longboarding hockey tournament, for example), the races happen all throughout Sunday starting at 8am sharp. The awards start just after 6pm. For the full details, visit the Coast Longboarding website here. Thanks to Sunshine Coast Tourism for giving us the head’s up!

5. Lawrence “Dinger” Edmonds Memorial Bull Riding – May 21 & 22

Perhaps you don’t have tickets for the Cloverdale Rodeo, or perhaps you’re seeking a smaller event and don’t want to deal with the crowds. If you want to experience the excitement of the rodeo and combine it with a scenic drive, drive up to Pemberton and head 10km east to the BW Ranch at Mount Currie for the Lawrence “Dinger” Edmonds Memorial Bull Riding event. We don’t have a whole lot of details other than it starts at 2pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Contact Tourism Pemberton for full details.

English-style high tea in Cloverdale

English-style high tea in Cloverdale

Sandwiches and pastries and tea… oh my! One of our favourite local foodie bloggers, Mijune (aka Follow Me Foodie) recently ventured out to Surrey’s Cloverdale for an English-style high tea. It’s true – you don’t have to go all the way to Victoria for this kind of experience anymore (not that you ever had to, but, well, erm… that’s a story for another post). Thanks to Mijune for sharing her culinary journey at the China Cup Tea Company – her photos and her detailed descriptions really tempt us to visit this tea shop sooner rather than later! Read the rest of her review here.

Edit: We’ve been alerted by the Cloverdale Reporter that the China Cup Tea Company is closing as of March 19.
