February 6th, 2012

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, but don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Whether you’re dating or single, White Rock has two fantastic Valentine’s events that should definitely be on your radar.

1. Music for your Valentine

Peninsula Productions is thrilled to present Lache Cercel and The Roma Swing Ensemble at the First United Church on Friday February 10. This 8pm concert is the perfect excuse for a pre-Valentine’s date and it will no doubt be an unbelievable evening of gypsy jazz and world music.

Peace Arch News journalist Alex Browne writes, “The virtuoso Romanian-born violinist has a soulful tone that speaks of generations of music tradition in his own family – and a staggering technique refined through years of classical music studies and performance. In format, his music acknowledges both his roots and the jazz style of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt that came to worldwide fame in the 1930s.” Read the rest of the article here.

How to Purchase Tickets

Tickets are $25 (or $30 at the door) which you can purchase from the Surrey Arts Centre, Tapestry Music (at 1335 Johnston Road), and at the First United Church. Check out Penninsula Productions’ website or like them on Facebook for more information about their upcoming events.

How to Get There

The First United Church is located at 15285 Semiahmoo Ave in White Rock.

2. REMIXX: Valentines Girls Night Out

If you’re single and female (and even if you’re not single or female), you won’t want to miss out on this unique mix and mingler.

White Rock’s Blue Frog Studios – a world-class recording studio and performance venue – is putting on REMIXX: Valentines Girls Night Out on February 14 which begins with an all-female cocktail party mix & mingler followed by a live music dance party with Myles Bigelow Duo. And yes, men are allowed for the latter part of the evening festivities. They write, “You’ll be treated like a lady from the time you enter the door. Eye Candy to be expected. Grab a drink at the cash bar and a plate of nibblies and interact and schmoosh with our Star Sponsors.” Read the rest of the details here.

How to Purchase Tickets

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online from Blue Frog Studios here. Get your tickets early as the event will sell out!

Men? You’re allowed to be there too… after 9pm. Then it’s $10 at the door for you.

How to Get There

Blue Frog Studios is located at 1328 Johnston Road in White Rock.

City and Slope – Vancouver’s Newest Festival | Feb 9-12

January 31st, 2012

Looking for something fun to do this February? Reminiscing that it’s been two years since Vancouver hosted the Olympics? If you’re like me and you long for that festive atmosphere of two winters ago, you’re in luck! City and Slope – Vancouver’s newest winter festival – is about to kick off!

What is City and Slope?

City and Slope is a 4-day mountain and music festival that is set to take over Vancouver’s three local mountains and rock its downtown core this February 9 to 12.

City and Slope will showcase the best that Vancouver has to offer in the winter: offering an exclusive bundled mountain pass to Grouse Mountain, Mount Seymour and Cypress Mountain to attractions right here in the city, including: lighting animations at the Telus World of Science and in Yaletown; a day-long ice craving competition at Yaletown Park; and a 6,000 person music event with superstar DJ Benny Benassi at the Vancouver Convention Centre on February 11.

What’s Happening on the Mountains:

Friday, February 10:

Cypress Mountain will be Canadiana themed on Friday, February 10, celebrating everything that makes Canada Canadian. Recreating the red and white excitement of the 2010 Winter Games, Cypress will be hosting Canada House with Canadian food, drink, decor and music.

Saturday, February 11 & Sunday, February 12:

Grouse Mountain is presenting 24 Hours of Winter on Saturday, February 11 and Sunday February 12 where revelers will enjoy nightlong skiing, dining, and a night chalk full of once-in-a-lifetime activities that range from guided Midnight Snowshoe tours to Nighttime Zipline tours and live DJ performances.

Sunday February 12:

Mount Seymour is presenting a retro slope-style event, MTSEYMOUR86 – a day where skiiers are invited to hit the slopes while showing off their best 80′s ski-style. There’ll be prizes for best dressed skiiers and snowboarders, and all the 80′s music a person can handle in their neon onesie.

What’s Happening in the City:

Friday February 10:

Musical performances by Alesso, Hey Ocean and Kevin Scott.

Saturday February 11:

Musical performances by Benny Benassi, KO and David Aude.

Neon Vancouver/Ugly Vancouver at the Museum of Vancouver, Science World light show, and Illuminate Yaletown will be displayed all weekend long. Illuminate Yaletown is City and Slope’s anchor event – and the most advanced light projection display Vancouver has ever seen. Illuminate Yaletown is a free, multi-night, entertainment-filled street party featuring remarkable light installations from local artists that are avant-garde, brilliant and breathtaking.

How to Attend City and Slope:

City and Slope is a destination event, attracting visitors from all over the Lower Mainland, the Province and the Pacific Northwest, evoking the community spirit, excitement and fun for all ages that the 2010 Olympic Winter Games brought to Vancouver.  Tickets are available on the City and Slope website, www.cityandslope.com, and those attending can purchase from a variety of ticket packages, including hotels, mountains and musical performances.

Whistler Film Festival – Whistler

The 11th annual Whistler Film Festival kicks off this Wednesday, November 30 and continues all week until Sunday, December 4. I was fortunate enough to attend last year for the first time (which you can read about on The Snipe here), and I highly recommend experiencing it, even if you’re a casual film buff. Contrary to what you may expect, the films aren’t only about winter sports; they’re actually quite varied in subject and genre.  Also, unlike other film festivals, Whistler’s is rather small and intimate with only a handful of venues and films being shown at any time. And the bonus? You can experience Whistler as a winter wonderland – a magical feeling indeed!

Denim Do Holiday Shopping Event – Langley

If you want to get a head start on your Christmas shopping and want to save big, be sure to attend Willowbrook Shopping Centre on Tuesday night (November 29) from 7pm to 10pm for their exclusive Denim Do Holiday Shopping Event. There will be over $12,000 in prizes including a chance to win a trip for 2 to Nashville, special retail offers, a blue jean fit clinic, blue carpet treatment (complimentary beverages, treats, and prizes), and even a performance by Jaydee Bixby! Tickets are just $10 and all proceeds go to Langley School District Foundation.

GEMS: Golden Ears Movie Series – Maple Ridge

This Monday, November 28 at 7:30pm, The ACT in Maple Ridge will be showing Score: A Hockey Musical as a part of the Golden Ears Movie Series (GEMS). GEMS is presented in cooperation with Film Circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival that promotes Canadian and international cinema in communities across Canada. This is the second season of the popular Golden Ears Movie Series – six nights of exceptional films!

Christmas Concerts – Powell River

Are you ready to embrace the holiday spirit? If you’re on the Upper Sunshine Coast, Brooks Secondary School will be performing two winter concerts at the Max Cameron Theatre. On Tuesday, November 29 there will be a Winter Band Concert, and on Thursday, December 1 there will be a Winter Choir Concert. Both performances begin at 7pm. On Wednesday, November 30, the Powell River Chorus will be performing their annual Christmas concert at the Evergreen Theatre at the Powell River Recreation Complex.

Vancouver Christmas Market

If you’ve ventured around downtown Vancouver recently, you might have seen what looks like a Christmas carnival (complete with carousel!) in front of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. This, folks, is the Vancouver Christmas Market. , you can stroll through the festively decorated outdoor Christmas village and be treated to row upon row of illuminated wooden huts offering handmade gifts and tempting treats. Listen to the sounds of bells, trumpeters and carolers. As day becomes night, thousands of Christmas lights sparkle and delicious aromas of mulled wine and spicy gingerbread waft through the air. The Vancouver Christmas Market is open from 11am until 9pm until December 23, and then 11am until 4pm on Christmas Eve.

7 Ways to Getaway in Burnaby

October 17th, 2011

Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival at Deer Lake Park

We’re really excited to be promoting 7 Ways To Getaway – a contest currently being put on by Tourism Burnaby. The 7 Ways To Getaway contest gives you the opportunity to win 1 of 7 unique getaways to Burnaby, whether it be a weekend to enjoy Sports, Adventure, Golf, Family, Casino, Music/Arts/Culture, or Shopping. Enter to win your favourite getaway, or enter to win them all.

Although Burnaby’s often thought of as a suburb of Vancouver, it’s actually the third largest city in BC after Vancouver and Surrey. It has the convenience of being right next door to all that Vancouver has to offer, and yet Burnaby has a wide variety of attractions and activities to suit all types.

Sports & Adventure

In July of 2009, I attended a wedding at the top of Burnaby Mountain at the SFU Diamond Alumni Centre. Moments before we were in the hustle and bustle of rush hour traffic, and only minutes later here we were, standing outside on the deck amidst the tree tops – panoramic views of Burrard Inlet and the North Shore Mountains – the air lush with cedar and Douglas fir. It was as if we transported ourselves into the wild.

Burnaby Mountain – at 370 m (1,214 ft) is the highest point in Burnaby proper and is one of Burnaby’s most prominent geographical features. It’s perhaps most famous for being home to Simon Fraser University, but local adventurists know it better for its adrenaline-inducing experience: mountain biking.

With an established network of mountain biking trails that range from beginner to advanced, challenging natural obstacles, and the Mountain Air Bike Skills Facility, Burnaby Mountain is a key mountain biking destination in the Lower Mainland due to its varied terrain and its ease of access.

But you don’t have to be a mountain biker to enjoy the outdoors in Burnaby.

How about a round of golf? Burnaby has two 18-hole public golf courses including Riverway Golf Course, a championship golf course complete with diverse yardage, a pro-shop and a new clubhouse.

Or if you simply enjoy watching professional sports, Downtown Vancouver is home to the Vancouver Canucks, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the BC Lions – all easily accessible from Burnaby by public transit.

Music, Arts & Culture

In May of 2008, my boyfriend and I took a cab from our home in Vancouver to Burnaby to spend the evening at Deer Lake Park. No, we weren’t going for a nature walk – as nice as that is; we were there for a concert. Who? Oh, you know… The National, Modest Mouse, and REM. Yup. These are the kind of shows that come to Burnaby. And if you’ve never experienced a show at Deer Lake Park, it’s truly a beautiful experience.

Burnaby has certainly gained a respectable reputation for its arts. In the past year alone it has hosted a plethora of fantastic shows including the 12th annual Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival which featured kd lang and the Siss Boom Bang this year.

Also at Deer Lake Park is the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts – an award-winning multi-purpose community arts facility. The Centre programs a year-round schedule of arts classes, performances, festivals, exhibitions and special events.

So Burnaby’s the kind of destination where there’s a lot going on right there, and if you want more? Downtown Vancouver’s just as accessible – only a Skytrain or cab ride away.

Family Activities

Burnaby Village Museum's Heritage Carousel

One of my favourite places to visit as a young girl was the Burnaby Village Museum and Carousel. Growing up watching shows like Little House on the Prairie and Road to Avonlea – I felt like I was going back in time to those eras.

A visit to the Burnaby Village Museum is in many ways like going back in time – to the 1920’s, in fact. Situated on a 10 acre site complete with period costumed townsfolk, there’s a lot whole family to explore – being taught lessons in a real one room school house, seeing the printing press in action at the print shop, the blacksmith pounding steel into horseshoes… and who can resist going for a ride on the colourful wooden horses of the carousel?

Burnaby has always made a great base for family vacations in Metro Vancouver, not only for its own attractions which are in the city, but also due to its close proximity to Vancouver attractions such as Grouse Mountain, the Vancouver Aquarium and Capilano Suspension Bridge.

Casinos

Photo: Burnaby’s Grand Villa Casino. Source: Tourism Burnaby.

You might not know this, but Burnaby is home to a casino – the Grand Villa Casino. Located 30 minutes from the airport and only 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, the casino makes a great adult getaway – a taste of Vegas in Vancouver. A weekend here allows you to combine a stylish hotel stay at the Delta Burnaby with fine-dining at EBO, gambling, and entertainment at Scala Lounge.

EBO Restaurant sounds like it would be Japanese, but it isn’t. It actually stands for “East of Boundary” – Boundary being Boundary Road – the road that divides the City of Burnaby from the City of Vancouver. Beloved amongst Vancouver foodies for Executive Chef Dan Craig’s exquisite creations, you know you’re in good hands.

Shopping

Metropolis at Metrotown
Photo: Shop ’til you drop at Metropolis at Metrotown – BC’s largest mall. Source: Tourism Burnaby.

Burnaby is practically synonymous for its shopping opportunities at Metrotown. Metropolis at Metrotown – the biggest shopping centre west of West Edmonton Mall, is indeed its most famous. As the largest mall in BC – it’s a one stop shop for Canadian department stores with The Bay and popular favourites such as Zara, Banana Republic, H&M, Forever XXI, Toys R Us, Old Navy, Chapters and more. Want to watch a movie or grab a bite? You’ve got Silver City Metrotown, and a variety of restaurants to match each palate. It’s all here – just a 20 minute Skytrain ride east of downtown Vancouver.

Of course, Metropolis at Metrotown, although the largest mall, isn’t your only Burnaby shopping option.

Foodies across the continent seeking authentic Asian cuisine know Burnaby for The Crystal Mall – the biggest Chinese-Asian shopping centre in Burnaby.

There’s also Lougheed Town Centre (The Bay, Walmart, SportCheck, London Drugs, Safeway) and Brentwood Town Centre (Sears, Zellers, Sport Mart, London Drugs) – also conveniently located on the Skytrain.

And if malls aren’t your fancy, check out Burnaby Heights. Located in the heart of North Burnaby on Hastings Street between Boundary and Gamma, this is an authentic neighbourhood, home to such local secrets as The Pear Tree Restaurant – an unpretentious high end restaurant famous for its seasonal, local, and sustainable menus, as well as Anton’s Pasta Bar – a long-time favourite amongst locals for their generous portions.

How to Enter

To enter the contest, go to www.7waystogetaway.com. By entering you could be the lucky winner of a trip to Burnaby. You’ll get to pick from 7 exciting getaways and choose the one that best suits your lifestyle.
